Murder mystery party decorations

Decorate for the game, not just the room: a clue table where each card goes when it's revealed, a taped-off crime scene corner, name tags with character names, and lighting a little lower than usual. Most of it you can print or already own.

Murder at Winterbourne's Toys: a mystery for 6 players, about 90 minutes. Invitations, character sheets, three clues and the solution in one PDF.

Decorations that help the game

  • A clue table. A side table with a lamp and a sign. Put each clue card there as you reveal it, so guests gather and argue over it.
  • A crime scene corner. Painter's tape on the floor in the shape of a body, by the door of the room where it happened. Add the murder weapon's stand-in, from whatever the story names.
  • Name tags. Character names in big letters, so guests talk to each other in character.
  • Accusation slips and a bowl on the clue table.
  • Lower lighting: a few lamps instead of the overhead lights.

Decorate for the story's setting

  • A toy shop (our free mystery): a toy train on the table, a corner set up as a photo booth with paper crowns.
  • A Halloween costume party (our Halloween edition): pumpkins, a horror-movie poster, a fortune teller's table with a crystal ball.
  • A Christmas manor (our Christmas edition): a "library" corner with books and an armchair, a silver cup on the side table.

What you can print

Our free PDF has the invitations, the character sheets and the clue cards. The holiday editions add name tags and accusation slips you can print and cut out.

Questions

How much should I spend on decorations?

Very little. The game carries the night; tape, lamps and things from around the house set the scene.

When should I set up?

Before guests arrive, but leave the clue table empty: the cards go out one at a time during the game.
